Our Stygian Values

Mission Statement

The goal of Stygian Dance and the Stygian Collective is to foster community, spark inspiration, and provide instruction and opportunities to all the dark, metal, or otherwise "weirdo" fusion dancers of the world. We believe everyone deserves a place to be themselves, and to dance to express themselves authentically. The Stygian Collective exists so we can help dancers achieve this by providing a community and learning platform that promotes inclusivity, creative freedom, self-expression, support, collaboration, and celebration of our bodies and art.

Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Statement

Stygian Dance is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment where people of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences are welcomed, respected, and empowered to contribute. We recognize that diversity enriches our creative and organizational work, and equity ensures fair access to opportunities and resources. We intentionally cultivate inclusion in all aspects of our culture, decision-making, programming, and community engagement. We approach this work with humility, recognizing that learning and growth are ongoing. Our commitment includes regular assessment, transparently shared goals, and accountability measures that reflect the voices of the communities we serve.

Cultural Context and Intent

Stygian Dance’s creative expression draws inspiration from a wide range of cultural, historical, and symbolic traditions. This work is interpretive and artistic, and it does not represent any singular group as authoritative nor endorse any political, religious, or ideological agenda. We acknowledge the deep histories and lived experiences behind the influences we reference and commit to honoring them with respect, accountability, and sensitivity. We do not condone hate, exclusion, or appropriation of any culture, and we recognize that all creative work exists within broader cultural and historical contexts that may be interpreted in varied ways.

Stygian Style is informed by MEHNAT traditional dance. We acknowledge and love our roots in raqs sharqi and Middle Eastern dance traditions. Many of our members dance and perform in both worlds, and we encourage students to research the history of this danceform.

Runic Dance Context

Daewen’s Runic Dance work draws from historical runic alphabets and pre-Christian symbolism as artistic and mythological inspiration. These elements are explored in an educational and creative context and are not affiliated with or supportive of any extremist, supremacist, or exclusionary ideology.

We recognize that some runic symbols have been appropriated by extremist movements. Stygian explicitly rejects hate, supremacism, and the misuse of cultural symbols for discriminatory purposes. We understand that runic imagery can evoke strong reactions due to its misuse by extremist groups. We approach this material with care, education, and cultural awareness.

The Stygian Code of Conduct

Section 1: Respect

The Stygian Collective is a space that welcomes all dancers interested in Metal, Dark, Gothic, and otherwise Alternative Bellydance, from every background, from all countries. We do not discriminate based on race, ethnicity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, national origin, religion, disability, or other legally protected characteristics. We believe our diversity gives us strength, and require all members to treat each other’s backgrounds with respect. A good rule is “your rights end where mine begin; your right to throw a punch ends at my nose.”

Section 2: Trust

In the Stygian Collective private community, there is a lot of personal information shared. Not only do we ask for feedback and help from one another on our art, we also share our troubles, and have a space dedicated for mental/emotional health support. We encourage members to approach one another with good faith and openness, while also recognizing that impact matters and accountability is important when harm occurs (see section 5 for further details). In general, we expect discussions and conversations within the Stygian community to stay private - however, confidentiality cannot be guaranteed in situations involving safety concerns, threats, or legal obligations.

Section 3: Safety

Stygian Dance maintains a zero tolerance policy for harassment, discrimination, hate speech, or sexual misconduct of any kind. Harassment includes unwelcome verbal, physical, or visual conduct based on race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected characteristic, as well as behavior that creates an intimidating, hostile, or unsafe environment. Sexual misconduct includes unwanted sexual comments, advances, contact, coercion, or exploitation. Physical contact within classes, rehearsals, performances, or events requires explicit, informed consent from all parties each time it occurs. Costuming, choreography, performance themes, or aesthetics do not imply consent to touch, sexualization, or boundary crossing. Stygian does not permit the use, display, or promotion of hate symbols or imagery associated with extremist or supremacist ideologies. While our aesthetic may draw from gothic or metal influences, imagery tied to real world harm, oppression, or hate has no place in this community.

Section 4: Professionalism

Even for members that identify primarily as students or beginners, we do expect a level of professionalism when interacting with the world as a representative of the Stygian Collective. We expect members to demonstrate the values of integrity, honesty, compassion, and accountability, and to behave professionally when interacting with the dance community at large. Members are expected to engage in mature, respectful, and accountable behavior consistent with this Code of Conduct.

Section 5: Conflict

In the event that two members come into conflict, we ask that the members resolve their conflicts privately, either between them, or in case it is necessary, with a neutral third-party moderator (either the Director of the Stygian Collective or another member of the Stygian Team). If mediation is not possible, please bring the conflict directly to the Director for resolution. Members are expected to address conflicts through private resolution or formal reporting channels before escalating publicly, unless safety concerns require immediate outside intervention. Conduct outside of our private channels that materially impacts the safety, reputation, or functioning of the Collective may be subject to review by the Stygian Team.

Section 6: Accountability & Consequence

Members who are unable or unwilling to follow this Code of Conduct may face disciplinary action. Consequences may include suspension from events, suspension from the private community, or removal from membership. Disciplinary decisions will follow a review process that includes notice of the concern and an opportunity for the member to respond. The Director retains final discretion in decisions affecting membership.

All dancers are expected to read, understand, and abide by this Code of Conduct upon joining and throughout their participation.

Questions or concerns should be directed to the Director or member of the Stygian Team privately.
